Maryvale Mill Upgrade
Australian Paper has a long history in the La Trobe Valley in Gippsland, Victoria, dating back to 1937 when established. Today, the Mill is Australia's largest integrated pulp and paper operation.
In response to global paper trends and changing consumer expectations for our products, Australian Paper embarked on a major upgrade of the Maryvale Pulp Mill in 2006 which was completed in December 2008. With an investment of $350 million, the upgrade significantly expanded the Mill's production of bleached pulp capacity and delivered a range of safety, health and environmental benefits.
Key Benefits of the upgrades:
Fibre:
- Local production of Elemental Chlorine Free (ECF) pulp.
- Reduced reliance on imported pulp and greater utilisation of local plantation fibre.
- Enhanced consistency of wood supply to the new Pulp Mill. The improvements in the wood handling, chipping and sorting processes will maximise fibre quality.
Safety:
- The new Pulp Mill is mitigating safety risks with the elimination of chemical storage areas and reduced handling.
Environment – Air:
- Changes in operational processes provide a further reduction in a number of emissions including Total Reduced Sulphur (TRS) emissions and Sulphur Oxides (SOx) emissions.
- There has been a decrease in Chlorine compound emissions as a consequence of converting to Elemental Chlorine Free and adopting a low impact process and oxygen delignification.
Environment – Water:
- 12% reduction of the Maryvale Mill’s total raw water use. An estimated 8 to 10 ML (Million litres) per day of recycled water will be sourced in future from the new $150 million Gippsland Water Recycling Factory.
- Reduced daily raw water inflows by 2.5% through efficiency innovations in manufacturing processes. Changes to water processes and replacing raw water with treated effluent in parts of the mill will result in a further saving of approximately 4ML per day.
Environment – Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Energy:
- Improvements in energy recovery from wood wastes and increased energy output from steam boilers continues to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels.
